Pick a route above and this shows the total mainline toll cost for a light vehicle (Class 1) — cars, bakkies and small SUVs — using SANRAL and concessionaire toll tariffs that took effect 1 March 2026. Return trips are simply double the one-way total. Gauteng’s e-tolls aren’t included in any route because they were switched off in April 2024 and haven’t been charged since.

Frequently asked

Do these totals include Gauteng e-tolls?

No. Gauteng’s e-toll gantries on the Johannesburg–Pretoria freeway network were switched off at midnight on 12 April 2024 and have not charged road users since — the cameras and gantry lights stay on for road-safety monitoring only. If your route is purely within Gauteng (e.g. Johannesburg to Pretoria), the toll cost is R0.

What counts as a “light vehicle”?

SANRAL’s Class 1 category — standard cars, bakkies, small SUVs and motorcycles under 3.1m in height at the front axle. Minibus taxis, trucks, buses and anything towing a trailer usually fall into a higher (more expensive) class — these totals won’t apply to those.

Will I pay exactly this amount?

These are the mainline plaza totals for the most direct route between each pair of points, using an e-tag or number-plate account. Cash payers sometimes pay a small premium at certain plazas, and if your actual trip uses a ramp plaza, a detour, or joins/leaves the highway partway along the route, your real total will differ slightly. Treat this as a close estimate for budgeting, not an exact quote.

Do toll fees change often?

Yes — SANRAL and the toll concessionaires (like N3TC and Bakwena) gazette new tariffs annually, typically effective 1 March each year, usually in line with inflation. The rates on this page were set 1 March 2026; expect the next adjustment around March 2027.

Can I combine this with a fuel cost estimate?

Yes — use the Fuel Cost Calculator alongside this page to get a full picture of what a long-distance trip will cost: fuel plus tolls.
