Pick a major hub and a destination town to get the road distance between them and a rough driving-time estimate. These are direct-route road distances (not straight-line “as the crow flies” figures) between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and 30 other South African towns and cities — useful for trip planning, and pairs neatly with the Fuel Cost and Toll Calculator pages.

Frequently asked

Why only Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban as starting points?

Those three are South Africa’s major metros and the most commonly searched trip origins. Building a true point-to-point calculator between any two of the 30+ towns listed would need a live routing service rather than a fixed reference table — for now this covers the three most useful starting points. If you need a distance between two smaller towns, add the two hub distances as a rough guide, or use a mapping app for an exact route.

Is this the shortest possible route, or the fastest?

It’s the standard, most commonly used route between each pair — usually the fastest, not necessarily the absolute shortest. Actual distance can vary a little depending on the exact route, road works, or detours.

How is the driving time worked out?

Distance divided by an assumed average of 90km/h, which is a reasonable long-distance-trip average on South African national roads — it does not include fuel, food or rest stops, border crossings, traffic in and around cities, or load-shedding-affected robots. Add extra time for all of those on a real trip.

Does this include tolls or fuel cost?

No — this page is distance and time only. Use the Toll Calculator and Fuel Cost Calculator alongside it for the full cost of a trip.
